West Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, Baule (or Baoule) people; Southern Africa, Angola, Chokwe peoples, ca. 20th century CE. A fascinating pair of wooden figures, a Baule semi-nude female and a Chokwe nude male, each standing atop wooden plinths. Larger of the two, the Baule female holds hands to her sides and wears a loincloth beneath her prominent, projecting breasts. Her long neck and stylized visage feature ritual scarification marks typical of the Baule people. Alternatively, the Chokwe male figure places his hands on his stomach, sitting just above his large phallus. Size of larger (female): 4.5" L x 5.5" W x 29.25" H (11.4 cm x 14 cm x 74.3 cm)
