Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1885 CE. A finely painted retablo on tin depicting the Captive Child, attributed to Agustin Barajas, also known as the "Skimpy Painter." El Nino Cautivo (Captive Child) is an unusual subject in retablo art. He is virtually always depicted dressed in an elaborate costume with shackles in one hand and fingers pointing up toward god as we see in this example. Worshippers petition the Captive Child to seek protection from financial woes, alcoholism, and addiction. Custom mat and frame. Size: Retablo itself measures 10” x 7” (25.4 x 17.8 cm); framed 15-1/4" x 12-1/4" (38.7 x 31.1 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private T. Jones collection, New York, NY.
