Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. An exceptional, finely painted retablo on tin depicting Saint Agnes of Montepulciano (Santa Ines del Monte Policiano) a rarely depicted Christian saint and martyr, one of the earliest venerated by the church, known as the patroness of girls, chastity, purity and betrothed couples, with traditional attributes including a white lamb and the martyr's palm. The lamb was presumably given to her because of the similarity to her name. In Latin the word agnus translates as "a lamb." She is portrayed as a young girl, because in her youth she dedicated herself to god and presumably she died at the tender age of thirteen. She is also depicted with long flowing hair like the Mary Magdalene, donning a deep blue robe and habit embellished with silver stars, rosary beads, and holds up a cross.

As for her story, Agnes was desired by many men who wanted her as their wife; however, she refused. Among the rejected was the governor's son who was so enraged that he wanted her beheaded. Fortunately the law forbade the beheading of a virgin. More heinous things were done in attempt to kill her or change her mind, but she was miraculously protected from most of the harm. Despite this harrowing life, Agnes never lost faith or understanding of her devotion to God.

Beyond this context and rich symbolism, this example demonstrates fine brushwork, a beautifully balanced composition, and fine details. A rare and important piece! Size: 7" x 5" (17.8 x 12.7 cm).
