Description:

Southeast Asia, Northern Thailand, ca. late 16th to early 17th century CE. A breathtaking bronze seated depiction of Buddha in the Bhumisparsa Mudra with traditional Chiang Sean sash and robe. Characteristic of Chiang Saen or Lanna style Buddha images which were influenced by the Sukhothai, this example displays finer curls in the coiffure, extended lotus shaped or flame finial, a more oval shaped face, and mantle that extends beyond the navel. The Buddha displays the Calling Earth to Witness mudra, also known as Subduing Mara or Bhumisparsa representing the moment just prior to enlightenment, with the Buddha sitting in meditation, his left hand in his lap with palm upright, and his right hand palm downward touching the earth. A beautiful example with gorgeous green patina of emerald hues further embellished with traces of lacquer coatings and gold leaf. Size: 9" x 6" x 3-1/4" (22.9 x 15.3 x 8.3 cm).
