Description:

South Asia, Nepal, ca. 17th century CE. A hand carved stele of Kubera, the treasurer of the gods, lord of the Yakshas, and protector of the world in Hindu mythology, crouching upon a lotus throne, holding his traditional attributes, a lotus bud and a mongoose in his primary hands, with a characteristic chubby belly, donning a low-waisted dhoti falling between his legs, a billowing sash ornamented with a foliate design, an intricately decorated necklace, pendant shaped earrings, and a five leaf crown. Kubera is the principal deity of wealth and prosperity. The term Kubera literally means "deformed" in Sanskrit, and consequently, he is typically depicted with an ill-shapen body as we see here. As a deity of wealth, he is traditionally elaborately adorned with jewelry as we also see in this example. An impressive stele depicting the legendary Kubera in all his glory! Size: 8" x 5-1/2" x 3-1/4" (20.3 x 14 x 8.3 cm)
