Description:

Europe, 14th to 16th century CE. This is an incredible repousse and chaised copper alloy pail. Pail has slightly flared rim, heavy bronze handle, and attachment rings. Decorated with a coat of arms also beneath a five-pointed coronet with a large hound leaping on each side. Edelweiss and vines decorate the field, with a leaping lion in a 4-sided "cartouche" on the opposite side and a large 6-sided star on the base surrounded by vines. The number of berries on each crown indicates that this belonged to a count; it would have been used in a kitchen, kept next to the fire and filled with water. Pail has a museum accession number - 21.23.27. Size: 11.6" W x 8.4" H (29.5 cm x 21.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex- The estate of Paul and Louise Bernheimer, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, CA - acquired before 1980
