Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, ca. 1250 to 1500 CE. This is an interesting assemblage of pre-Columbian artifacts. The poncho itself, including the fringe along bottom, is ancient, probably Chancay from Peru's North Coast. The gold over silver discs are also ancient, Chimu or Inca, but were added to the poncho in more modern times. The embroidered figures, while in the Pre-Columbian style, are modern additions, probably added in the early 20th century. When combined, they display beautifully. Size of poncho when laid out: 34"W x 27"H (54" total length if fabric if laid out) (86.4 cm x 68.6 cm (137 cm)).

Provenance: Ex-private Houston, TX collection acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994.
