Description:

South Africa, Zimbabwe, Triassic era, ca. 237 to 228 million years ago. A petrified piece of wood, the top cross section is cut and polished while the rest is left in a natural state of fossilization. The striking green coloration is due to the presence of chromium, which interestingly, gets darker with higher levels of humidity. Currently, the humidity is a low 30%, the green is an ashy white as pictured, but this natural 'hygrometer' might vary in hue depending on how and where it is stored! The petrification process involves the rapid burial of the tree or pieces under sediment, the lack of oxygen or anaerobic environment was perfect for stopping the normal process of decay. Flooding and volcanic activity are usually responsible for the layers of sand, silt, and ash needed to create the right types and amount of sediment. Green chromium rich stone is rarer than most other varieties of petrified wood! Size: 7" L x 4" W x 7.75" H (17.8 cm x 10.2 cm x 19.7 cm)
