Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Zacatecas, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely hand-built terracotta seated figure with bent legs, extended posterior nubbins for support, sinuous arms bent to a portly abdomen, and perky breasts. The highly-burnished figure displays a bichrome color scheme comprised of creamy beige on her extremities and head as well as deep red-orange hues on her torso and arms. Her head is characteristically expressive, with ovoid eyes, a projecting nose, and an open, petite mouth, with perforated hemispherical ears on either lateral side. The hollow form of this figure denotes its use as a vessel for votive offerings, perhaps at a location or altar devoted to fertility or pregnancy. Size: 6.375" H (16.2 cm).
