Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Four cast bronze openwork components from a scabbard, made to be placed over and around a leather sheath. Each has a face formed of repeated diamond shapes between twin bars, all with lightly incised circular patterns (believed to be an ancient symbol used as a ward against the evil eye). The bars wrap around to form a backing. The more elaborate terminal portion - either the chape, the tip of the scabbard, or the mouth, the uppermost portion - has the same shape as the other components but then tapers to a disc in an O-shape. Comes with custom stand. Size of largest piece: 1.9" W x 4.8" H (4.8 cm x 12.2 cm); size if laid out: 1.9" W x 10.35" H (4.8 cm x 26.3 cm); height on stand: 12.8" (32.5 cm).

Based on its size, it seems likely that this scabbard was made to house a Roman gladius. The gladius, a short sword, was one of the most ubiquitous weapons in the ancient world. Carried by the legions from the end of the Roman Republic onward, these swords journeyed throughout their Empire, and their remains have been found scattered across that region. For example, multiple bronze scabbard components have been pulled from the Thames in London, probably deposited in the river's muddy bottom by a Roman in Londinium making a votive offering. This example is a rare one that has multiple preserved components in beautiful condition.
