Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas, ca. 600 to 500 BCE. Tweet, tweet, tweet! A sweet hand-built bowl with impressively decorated exterior walls presenting an avian theme, incised with four recumbent birds with their beaks alternating between upwards and downwards positions, perhaps suggesting that the depicted bird is spinning along on it journey through the skies. Ceramics were a significant form of visual culture created by the Paracas artisans. Usually their vessels were decorated after the firing process with resin-based colors, but here the rich red and brown slips as well as the painstakingly incised details were created prior to the firing process. Size: 7.375" in diameter x 2.875" H (18.7 cm x 7.3 cm)

In the Pre-Columbian world, birds were highly symbolic and favorite iconographical subjects in art. As sky animals, they were associated with the celestial sun and moon and were believed to act as messengers between humankind and their deities. Given the shape of the beak of the birds depicted on this example, we may very well be looking at parrots whose brilliant plumage and ability to fly well above tree line made these birds ideal incarnations for sky deities.
