Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Alcarraza, Ilama phase, ca. 800 BCE to 100 CE. A redware pregnant female double-spouted stirrup vessel, the figure kneeling with hands on thighs, her body nude with incised abstract geometric motifs adorning her upper arms and concentric circles marking her nipples and navel. She presents a tranquil visage comprised of closed, coffee-bean shaped eyes, plump cheeks, and a naturalistic nose with pierced nostrils and closed mouth, framed by a finely incised coiffure. Size: 5.25" L x 4.75" W x 9.25" H (13.3 cm x 12.1 cm x 23.5 cm)

A similar example appears in Armand Labbe's "Columbia Before Columbus" (figure 53, page 57), though the styling of this figure appears to belong to the Ilama phase (see figure 43, p. 54) rather than transitioning between Ilama and Yotoco, as the form and incised details are characteristic of Ilama-phase ceramics, and we do not see resist-painted designs characteristic of the Yotoco.
