Description:

Western Europe, probably England or France, Neoclassical Period, ca. early 19th century CE. A fine protome cast from brass depicting a majestic lion head with a perforated suspension hole on each side of its bushy mane. The protruding leonine countenance presents with sunken eyes bearing delineated pupils, a narrow snout with a triangular nose and incised jowls, and a gaping mouth plugged with a nubbin cap. Behind the mouth is a cylindrical spout meant to feed water out of the lion's maw and create a fountain effect. A pair of perky ears protrudes from atop the shaggy head, and layers of brown and russet patina cover the entire casting. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 2.5" W x 2.9" H (6.4 cm x 7.4 cm)
