Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A well-preserved ceramic cylinder vessel, incised with highly abstract motifs resembling human heads with serpent-like bodies. The mouth of the vessel is wide and the base rounded; chevrons and diamonds, also incised, circle the unpronounced rim above a border of three incised lines. A cylinder like this was probably made for to be placed into one of the incredibly distinctive shaft tombs of this region. Size: 6.25" W x 6" H (15.9 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: ex Dr. George Wald, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in the 1960s. Dr. Wald was the recipient of the 1967 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the retina
