Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala style, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. A hand-carved and string-cut anthropomorphic figure in a rich mottled green stone (probably diorite). The figure has a large head with a prominent nose, rounded shoulders, arms bent and meeting at the waist, wide hips, and spread legs. Ancient artisans of this region of Mexico were especially proficient at portraying the human body in uncomplicated yet articulate forms by mastering the string-cut technique. While the Mezcala people were adept at creating proto-typical minimalist works of art, they certainly do not lack in character. Size: 1.2" L x 2" W x 4.125" H (3 cm x 5.1 cm x 10.5 cm); 4.375" H (11.1 cm) on included custom stand.
