Description:

Baule people, Ivory Coast, West Africa, Early-mid 20th Century. Wood with oil based paints. 11.75"H. Among the Baule peoples of Ivory Coast, West Africa, there is a tradition of making wooden, male and female, spouse figures from the 'other world.' The Baule believe everyone has such an other world spouse, usually making its presence known through sexually explicit dreams or causing problems in the daily life of an individual. These spirits (blolo bla-wife & blolo bian-husband) are eventually materialized through a diviner who is asked by the other world lover / spirit to be made visible to this world. The physical characteristics are usually determined by the client, the diviner, or the spirit itself.
