Ganda or Hima people, Uganda, early 20th century. A container for cow's milk found among the nomadic Ganda or Hima peoples. Only the men actually milked the animal, but the women used these elegantly shaped vessels when adding herbs and other spices to flavor the liquid. Showing indigenous, lovingly crafted metal repair work in several areas. A woven fiber lid with black and white, geometric decoration was collected with this very fine example made from a single section of wood. The form is at once both masculine (phallic) and feminine (breast). 10" total w/ fiber cover on top, 9" wood container alone
