Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A beautiful and wearable ring formed from thick wires of 94% silver. The middle of the shank features wires that twist around one another and gradually taper down to form the narrow terminals that coil around the opposite arms. Viking men and women wore silver accessories like this example as signs of wealth. They were often used as currency or deposited in rivers as offerings to the gods, though they were also buried with their owners upon death.
