Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumer, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A fabulous necklace composed of 6 blue and yellow glass beads, 4 carnelian beads, 14 jasper beads, and dozens of small faience beads in hues of white and blue. The central, oblong-shaped pendant is made from white faience, and the surrounding beads are arranged symmetrically on either side. Capped with a modern gold-filled barrel clasp half on either terminal, this is a wonderful example of wearable ancient fashion! Size (necklace): 17" L (43.2 cm); size (largest bead): 0.55" W (1.4 cm).

Provenance: ex-private Queens, New York, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s

  • Condition: Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. All beads are ancient while string and gold-filled components are modern. Minor nicks to some beads, with light fading to some finer details, and some clouding to stone and glass color, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
