Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Huari/Wari or Chancay, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A finely carved wooden mask from a mummy bundle, the visage with a high relief pronounced nose, incised large almond shaped eyes, and a square mouth. Wood shows wonderful evidence of its age. Burials discovered all along the arid coast of Peru indicate that the deceased were accompanied by offerings of ceramics, garments, featherwork, precious metals and wood. A mask or false head was ritualistically placed over the mummy bundle. Due to the dry climate, even artifacts made of wood and textile have been discovered in remarkable condition. This example is particularly impressive for its dramatic expression and preserved form. Custom stand. Size: mask alone measures 3.5" W x 6.75" H (8.9 cm x 17.1 cm); 8.75" (22.2 cm) H on stand.
