Description:

Native American, Southwest, Santo Domingo Pueblo, ca. mid 20th century. A handbuilt polychrome pottery vessel created by the traditional coil-and-scrape method, hand-painted with leafy, floral tendrils in orange, cream, and black. While the nineteen Pueblos of the four corners region use a shared coiling technique that was introduced about 1500 years ago, the painted designs vary from pueblo to pueblo. This said, the various pueblo pottery decorative programs do overlap in honoring ancient iconography inspired by nature - plants, birds, feathers, other animals, clouds, rain, and more. Size: 9.15" W x 8.125" H (23.2 cm x 20.6 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection; ex-private Dr. Monroy collection, San Diego, California, USA
