Description:

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved coconut shell that has been hollowed out, polished, painted, and outfitted with a brass foot. The rim of the shell has been ornately decorated with a metal rim and a lacquered wood design consisting of flowers. The exterior shell is lacquered or painted with a polished black hue and a threaded bolt attaches the bowl to the foot. The brass foot is a flared, pyramidal shape with relief shapes on each face. The motifs appear to be Japanese inspired, and include a Shinto torii, a fan, and scrolling foliate shapes. The lip of the base is stamped with "EW" and "Henry." An intriguing vessel combining traditional Hawaiian artistry and materials with a unique foot! Size: 3.5" W x 4" H (8.9 cm x 10.2 cm)
