Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful silver vessel used a tobacco canister made from sterling silver (94%) with incised motifs. The container is made from two pieces that create a rounded body and a tubular neck and opening. An integral hoop with a chain attaches to the lid. Both convex sides are stamped with geometric motifs and floral patterns. Tobacco canteens were traditionally made of rawhide and wood, but newer silversmithing practices in the 1880s led to these pretty silver containers that could show off this new artistry. Size: 4" L x 3" Diameter (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm); quality of silver: 94%; total weight: 62.5 grams
