Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. An iron sword with a ring-shaped pommel, a narrow handle, and a dramatically bent blade. Swords of this type were perhaps not used for battle but as utilitarian tools for farming, butchery, pelt-making, and shaping of wood or mud bricks. The bent blade may have been ceremonial in nature when it was buried with its owner. Accompanying the sword is a semicircular horseshoe with upturned terminal tabs. Size of largest (sword): 9.75" L x 1.9" W (24.8 cm x 4.8 cm)
