Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A fine forged-iron axe head comprised of a circular socketing shaft with tabs protruding from the top and bottom ends of the butt, a sturdy neck, and a broad blade with a sharpened edge. Smaller axes like this example may have been used in battle as a throwing instrument or for hand-to-hand combat, though it was likely used for more utilitarian purposes such as chopping and shaping wood or mud bricks. Size: 5.875" L x 1.9" W x 3.5" H (14.9 cm x 4.8 cm x 8.9 cm); 4.3" H (10.9 cm) on included custom stand.
