Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 9th to 12th century CE. A marvelous bronze attachment or buckle featuring the relief image of the Norse god Odin accompanied by his animal familiars - the wolves Geri and Freki and the ravens Huginn and Muninn. Considered messengers of the god, the ravens flank his bearded head with beaks facing inward, as though whispering in each ear, while the wolves stand below, their snouts positioned outward presumably standing guard. The birds, Huginn and Muninn, represent thought and memory, and were the eyes and ears of Odin, bringing him news from around the world, known as Midgard. Size: 0.9" W x 1.5" H (2.3 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg) and then Latvia collection; found on the Baltic Sea coast prior to 1982
