Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A penannular or omega type of buckle fibula cast from brass and incised with notches on the obverse face. The terminal ends are folded back and forged into abstract dragon heads in profile as decorative elements. These brooches would be fastened on the wearer's right shoulder with the pin facing upward. The curved prong pin still articulates smoothly and attached via the looped end. This style of brooch was originally created in the Celtic British Isles around 600 CE and became popular throughout Scandinavia after the Vikings began to have contact with Celtic peoples following their forays along the coasts at the end of the 8th century CE.
