Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful brass "crossbow" fibula or brooch used to fasten the cloak of a Roman soldier and/or citizen. The details on this example are marvelous; note the onion-dome shaped termini as well as the concentric circles and stylized ridged motifs adorning its body. Given its attractive design, this fibula also served as an impressive decorative ornament. Indeed, the brooches of the ancients were both serviceable and beautiful! In addition, they served as a status symbol! Size: 2.2" W x 3.7" H (5.6 cm x 9.4 cm)
