Pre-Columbian, Peru / Ecuador border, Vicus-Frias culture, ca. 500 BCE. A fascinating redware vessel in the form of a bat with a large, ovoid opening in its lower body, small, curved wings that form a lip around the vessel mouth, and a large head with big ears, small eyes, and a large open mouth full of teeth. We now that later cultures like the Moche saw the bat as an animal associated with sacrifice, darkness, and the night, especially because of their observations of the vampire bat. The earlier Vicus culture likely held similar beliefs. Size: 6.45" W x 8.95" H (16.4 cm x 22.7 cm)
