Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Proto-Nazca, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A remarkable and large muneca fringe mantle of tightly-woven yarns made from natural camelid (alpaca or llama) wool fiber by the Proto-Nazca - comprised of thirty-one muneca ("doll" in Spanish) figures. Each muneca doll exhibits thick locks of sweeping brown hair and stylized bodies displaying abstract step motifs in varying hues including cobalt, ruby, maroon, wheat, emerald, sage, sapphire, citrine, jet, and pearl. Each body is conjoined with that of its neighbor with a slender panel of rectangular motifs across their chests, and their arms appear to be raised towards the sky. The mantle is mounted on a black, museum-quality linen backing. Size (textile): 47" L x 6" H (119.4 cm x 15.2 cm); size(backing): 62.5" L x 21.75" H (158.8 cm x 55.2 cm).
