Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Paracas, ca. 100 BCE to 100 CE. A collection of textile fragments woven and embroidered from camelid wool (alpaca or llama) and cotton. The pieces are colorful, the result of natural dyes and minimum sunlight exposure. These were likely once embellishments on tunics or mantles worn to political and religious events by the elite and / or laid to rest with the deceased, wrapped around the body as part of a mummy bundle. The "block color style" used to create the mythical beings was done by stitching outlines and infilling with more stitching which allowed the artisans to explore more organic shapes in their patterns. Motifs on their textiles mirror those of their ceramics that they used to wrap their dead and probably represent gods or mythical figures of power - the largest piece is perhaps suggestive of a decapitator deity, and the others depict birds and "flying figures" with serpents emerging from their mouths! Size of largest textile fragment: 9.75" L x 5" W (24.8 cm x 12.7 cm); frames: 11.75" L x 6" W (29.8 cm x 15.2 cm)
