Description:

Native American, North America, Hohokam, Sacaton Red-on-Buff Phase, ca. 900-1100 CE. This large helmet bowl stems from the Sacaton Red-on-Buff phase of the Hohokam Sedentary period. Usually designs are geometric and feature interlocking scrolls framed within rectangular panels. This example, however, is extremely rare in that it features a figurative element with four Kokopellis painted red on buff decorating the interior of the bowl's surface. Note that some of the Kokopellis actually appear black on account of imperfect firing, but this makes it even more intriguing in our eyes. Kokopellis are worshipped as fertility deities and usually depicted as hunchback flute players oftentimes with feathers or antenna-like protrusions on his head. As fertility deities, Kokopellis preside over both childbirth and agriculture for several Native American cultures of the Southwest. 11-1/2"D at widest point x 5-1/2"H
