Description:

Native American, North America, Hohokam, Sacaton Red-on-Buff Phase, ca. 900-1100 CE. This miniature bowl stems from the Sacaton Red-on-Buff phase of the Hohokam Sedentary period. Usually designs are geometric and feature interlocking scrolls framed within rectangular panels. This example, however, is extremely rare in that it features a figurative element with five scorpions with tails that bend upward and forward painted red on buff decorating the interior of the bowl's surface, Emil Haury studied scorpions painted on Hohokam pottery and concluded that many of the scorpion designs are somewhat abstract, some having only four legs for instance. However, common to all Hohokam representations of scorpions, they all have tails that are bent upward and forward. Peculiar! 3-1/2"W at widest point x 1-7/8"H
