Description:

Native American, Navajo Culture, Transitional Period, ca. 1910-1920. Transitional Period weavings incorporate many outside influences on Navajo weaving. The United States government began introducing new materials such as fabric, yarn, and weaving tools to the Navajo during their captivity at Bosque Redondo. Together with the influences of Hispanic and Mexican textiles, the Transitional Period style emerged. These textiles are called "transitional" because they are not true wearing blankets nor are they true rugs. In addition, the introduction of aniline dyes in a wide range of bold colors gave weavers the freedom to create striking color combinations. This example is comprised of handspun natural grey, white and brown, handspun aniline blue, purple, orange, red, green, turquoise, light blue, and lavender, and finally, handspun vegetal yellow. Old tag reads, "variation on the chief"! 29" x 64.5"
