Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca culture, Phase 3 to 4, ca. 200 to 450 CE. An impressively sizeable and meaningful polychrome pottery vessel presenting a piriform silhouette. The iconographic/decorative program is comprised of an upper register of abstract avians in chocolate brown, russet red, and slate grey against a white ground. The birds are separated by tall triangular motifs linked via horizontal bands - all in russet red, cream, and chocolate brown. The birds' winged bodies emerge above these horizontal bands and their tailfeathers are presented below. Beneath are slender horizontal bands, a wide register with vertical motifs that may represent flight or feathers, and finally additional horizontal bands - all in a complimentary color scheme. In addition to the fine technique and artistry of this piece, it also boasts rich symbolic content; birds were associated with the celestial realm and believed to act as messengers between humans and their deities in the Pre-Columbian world. Size: 8.25" in diameter x 8.75" H (21 cm x 22.2 cm)

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
