Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1000 CE. An elegant, finely carved wooden tupu - an ancient Andean version of a brooch or shawl pin - with a finial in the form of a seated human figure in profile wearing a helmet and holding a weapon or scepter in his hands. He sits upon the tupu pin (contiguous with his form) with a wider upper end that is incised with a triangular serpent head. Look closely and you will see those snake eyes. A wonderful example, replete with superb artistry and intriguing iconography. Size: 8.375" H (21.3 cm); 9.25" H (23.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
