Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A dramatic mold-made ceramic oil lamp with a small loop handle on the back and a rounded, projecting spout on the front. Inside the discus is a relief depiction of a goddess on a chariot pulled by two winged steeds - almost certainly Luna (Selene to the Greeks), goddess of the moon, who drove her steeds across the heavens. Tiny concentric circles on underside serve as a maker's mark. Size: 4.1" L x 3.05" W x 1.7" H (10.4 cm x 7.7 cm x 4.3 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
