Description:

Roman, North Africa, Tunisia, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A large mold-made orange slipware terracotta oil lamp with a raised ring base, rounded walls, an unperforated conical handle, slight recessed shoulders, twin fill holes, and a flat neck channel leading to a gaping wick spout. The shoulder displays an alternating motif of triangular and spade-shaped leaves enclosed by a pair of raised, curved bars, all in low-relief. The central tondo displays an amusing dog (canis lupus familiaris) in a characteristic striding pose with an open mouth, bushy tail, upraised ears, and lightly-incised linear patterns indicative of fur. A beautiful and classic example! Size: 5.25" L (13.3 cm).
