Description:

West Africa, Liberia, Dan/Bassa, ca. early 20th century CE. A finely carved personal maskette created to serve as an talisman by the Dan peoples and neighboring cultures, replete with features characteristic of Dan masks including a concave face, high-domed forehead, openwork eyes, upturned nose, pointed chin, and protruding mouth. Note the smooth surface and very dark patina on this piece, two signs of northern techniques. In addition, the central ridge in the middle of the forehead and slit eyes are traits typical of Deangle masks which are traditionally worn by an individual serving as intermediary between village and forest initiation camp. Such maskettes were created to connect the owner with a specific spirit that is believed to offer guidance and protection. Traditionally, these are hidden and only revealed during special rituals. In addition such maskettes are carried by their owners during travels. A superb passport maskette! Size: 2.75" W x 4.5" H (7 cm x 11.4 cm)
