West Africa, Ivory Coast/Liberia, ca. early 20th century CE. A personal passport maskette carved from a light wood, created by the Dan peoples to serve as an amulet, replete with features characteristic of Dan masks including a concave face, high-domed forehead, upturned nose, and pointed chin. This example has eye slits and finely incised geometric decoration on the forehead. Such maskettes were created to connect the owner with a specific spirit that is believed to offer guidance and protection. Traditionally, these are hidden and only revealed during special rituals. In addition such maskettes are carried by their owners during travels. Size: 2" W x 3.875" H (5.1 cm x 9.8 cm)
