Description:

Ancient Near East, Achaemenid Persian Empire, ca. 550 to 330 BCE. A cast, mold-made bronze beaker that tapers near its base before flaring into a slight foot. The rim also flares out slightly, giving a wider opening to drink from. The exterior body has a ribbed design and then bands of geometric decoration; just above the narrowest point is a repeated palmette design. Bronze beakers seem to have been important pieces of grave furniture, possibly for holding ritual libations or provisioning the dead in the afterlife; the famous Arjan tomb from southwestern Iran, from the earliest part of the Achaemenid period, contains a beaker of similar style; the British Museum holds another that has a lotus-and-palmette chain on its exterior as well. Comes with custom stand. Size: 2.8" W x 7.25" H (7.1 cm x 18.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private LA County collection
