Description:

Byzantine Empire, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A bronze censer, a container for burning incense during Christian rituals, with a tripod leg and a beautiful bowl atop a long thin neck. The bowl has a spiked design around its flared rim. Some scholars have noted that bronze items like this, with their increased cost over pottery ones, were probably a kind of heirloom. Bronze items, which have been theorized to remain in a family for at least three generations because of their expense before being recast could also have additions added to them -- like crosses or other applied designs -- to suit changing styles. Size: 4" W x 7.5" H (10.2 cm x 19 cm)
