Description:

**Originally Listed At $400**

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz), ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A fine palma of a rectangular form, hand-carved from a coarse grey stone, and depicting the head of an abstract monkey. The simian head projects from the obverse side and has smooth cheeks, a rounded chin below an open mouth, deep-set eyes with small drilled holes for additional inlays, cupped ears, and a crested brow line. The palma was made to sit upon the yoke, part of the stone gear for the ballgame. Although the ballgame was played across Mesoamerica, palmas are particular to Veracruz, at least as far as current excavations show. Size: 3.55" W x 5.5" H (9 cm x 14 cm).
