Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, Veracruz culture, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A wonderful pottery figure of a standing priest or lord adorned with black bitumen pigment. Standing with legs spread, the figure is elaborately dressed in a long skirt, tiered belt, and layered chest piece along with necklaces, anklets, armbands, earrings, and a large headdress. Jet-black bituminous pigment called chapapote highlights his slender eyes and envelops his chin, surrounding his slightly open mouth, while a third leg extends from the verso allowing the figure to stand independently of support. Size: 6" W x 11.1" H (15.2 cm x 28.2 cm)
