Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A wonderful pottery example of a seated female skillfully modeled partially nude with voluptuous, exposed breasts and a skirt draping her folded legs. The figure looks ahead with a characteristically oversized head and an expressive visage comprised of bold features - large, almond-shaped eyes, arched brows, a sharp nose, and a partially open mouth exposing delineated teeth - all topped by a helmet-like headdress or coiffure. She holds one arm up, bent at the elbow to touch the side of her head as the other arm projects outward as though summoning the viewer. Black, red, and beige slip additionally adorn the figure, detailing necklaces on her clavicle as well as abstract tattoos across her breasts and torso. Size: 4.8" L x 7" W x 12.1" H (12.2 cm x 17.8 cm x 30.7 cm)

Provenance: private Cheshire, Connecticut, USA collection, by descent, acquired in 1965; ex-Armando Hecht collection, Mexico City, Mexico
