Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz), ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A finely detailed pottery "sonriente" figure (literally "smiling face") standing atop delineated legs adorned with beaded ankle bands. The portly fellow raises both arms with open palms in a cautionary gesture, wears an applied necklace with a central pendant, and has a broad neck to support the enlarged head. Coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a bulbous nose, cupped ears, a smile with rounded cheeks, and accentuated nasolabial folds define the expressive countenance, and the large headdress features spiraling lateral tendrils and ample remains of original red-orange pigment. Size: 9.75" W x 12.2" H (24.8 cm x 31 cm) with included custom stand.
