Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Veracruz culture, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A fantastical flute with a priest or elite figure dressed in elaborate robes - and most of all an elaborate headdress! The figure stands with its hands out, its palms extended. Atop its head is a massive construction with a visor, bosses the size of the figure's head, and a huge plume of feathers that almost covers the top of the flute, which is attached to the figure's unsculpted back. Remains of pigment are still visible on much of the figure, who would once have been brightly painted. Size: 6.25" W x 10.75" H (15.9 cm x 27.3 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in 1968-1970
