Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz), ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A hand-built pottery female 'coast watcher' figure seated in a cross-legged position. She presents nude with bangles and bracelets on tubular arms that rest atop bent knees, perky breasts in front of her rigid chest, and rounded shoulders that taper to a wide neck. Her expressive countenance features slit-form eyes, a ring-adorned nose, full lips, and large ear spools, all beneath an elaborate headdress with a brim of cinched panels surmounted by an 'X'-form top panel. Traces of red and orange pigment are visible across the composition. A lovely example from ancient Mexico! Size: 3.5" W x 6.4" H (8.9 cm x 16.3 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired between 1968 and 1970
