Description:

Pre-Columbian, Veracruz, ca. 100 BCE to 800 CE. A head, probably separated from a large figure, made of separate pieces of molded pottery put together in a kiln. These heads were made separately and added to figures, which is why we find so many of them separate today! The face is startling, an open mouth emphasized by black, petroleum-rich pigment which is one of the characteristics of Veracruz pottery. Elaborate jewelry and headdress complete the figure. Size: 4.9" W x 5.15" H (12.4 cm x 13.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970
