Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. The ancients of the Americas created beautiful musical instruments out of pottery, most adorned with animal or human figurines, and the indigenous of Colima were no exception. Here we have lovely flute adorned with an intriguing animporphic (a sea creature perhaps) or mythical figure, with coffee-bean shaped eyes, a curved protruding nose, pursed lips, round perforated ears, oddly tiny, attenuated feet or flippers, a headband decorated with shell-shaped appliques, and barnacle-like points adorning the rest of his head. The flute is perforated with two finger holes and a larger hole on the mouthpiece that produce a variety of tones. A wonderful musical instrument from the ancients of the Americas. Custom stand. Size: flute measures 5" L (12.7 cm); 5.5" L (14 cm) on stand.
